The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (UNSG) in Libya, Abdoulaye Bathily, emphasized, on November 23 in Rabat, Morocco’s role in the success of the inter-Libyan dialogue, notably through the Kingdom’s commitment to Libya’s electoral process.
During a joint press briefing with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, Bathily praised “the results achieved thanks to Morocco’s support”, expressing his hope that “the Kingdom will further accompany this political process, especially as we are in the process of implementing organic election laws and related agreements”.
The Special Representative pointed out that monitoring the implementation of these laws, in a country conducive to tensions and conflicts such as Libya, requires reaching agreements based on good faith between political actors.
Bathily also emphasized the importance of reaching “consensual solutions as quickly as possible”, notably in light of “the current situation that should not persist any longer and is fraught with major risks”.
Noting that Libya is in a regional context marked by tensions, the United Nations official affirmed that the Libyan people and the international community aspire to the establishment of peace in this country.
The United Nations official also recalled the repercussions of these tensions on regional and global security, given Libya’s geostrategic position.
Morocco hosted, between May 22 and June 6, 2023, the meeting of the Libyan 6+6 Joint Commission tasked by the Libyan House of Representatives and High Council of State (HCS) with drafting the electoral laws for the legislative and presidential elections in Libya.
Following two weeks of meetings in Bouznika, the members of this commission reached a compromise on the laws governing the presidential and parliamentary elections scheduled for the end of the year.
