Morocco’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), Omar Hilale, was unanimously elected on June 1, by the 193 member states, Vice-President of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
Morocco will occupy this significant position on behalf of the African continent from September 2023 to September 2024.
The General Assembly also elected the Permanent Representative of Trinidad and Tobago to the United Nations (UN), Dennis Francis, as President of the 78th session, along with other vice-presidents, representing the five United Nations (UN) regions.
Morocco’s election to the vice-presidency of the General Assembly is a testament to the Kingdom’s active role within the United Nations (UN) under the High Directives of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.
Morocco is committed to implementing the United Nations (UN) pillars, namely international peace and security, development, and human rights.
The Moroccan Kingdom has a strong presence in the fields of peacekeeping and peacebuilding, countering terrorism, violent extremism, and hate speech, and the promotion of international governance, human rights, and gender equality.
This election also reflects international recognition of Morocco’s substantial and constructive contribution to the United Nations (UN) and other international forums.
The high-level week of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) will be marked by the organization of several huge events within this multilateral organization.
These events include the High-Level Meeting (HLM) on Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness, and Response, where Hilale is co-facilitating the political declaration to be adopted by the Heads of State and Government.
The agenda of the high-level week also include the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Summit, the High-Level Dialogue on Financing for Development (FfD), the Climate Ambition Summit, the Preparatory Ministerial Meeting for the Summit of the Future, the High-Level Meeting (HLM) on Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and the High-Level Meeting (HLM) on the fight against Tuberculosis (TB).
