The United Arab Emirates (UAE) Representative to the Fourth Committee reaffirmed its unwavering position in support of Morocco’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The Emirati representative affirmed, on October 9, before the members of the Fourth Committee (4C) of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), the UAE’s “firm position in support for Morocco in its just causes in regional and international fora to preserve its sovereignty, as well as the security and unity of its lands”.
The Emirati diplomat stressed that her country supports Morocco’s efforts to defend its legitimate rights as well as the Moroccan Autonomy Plan that the Security Council (SC) describes as serious and credible in its resolutions, noting that the Autonomy Plan, which was presented in 2007 to bring this regional dispute to a definitive settlement, is an “important solution” in line with the United Nations (UN) Charter and resolutions.
Recalling the efforts of the United Nations Secretary-General’s (UNSG) Personal Envoy for the Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, notably his recent visit to Morocco, Algeria, and Mauritania, the Emirati representative called for the resumption of the round-table process between the relevant parties in order to reach a solution based on compromise.
The Emirati diplomat also praised Morocco’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the human development dynamic in the Kingdom’s Southern provinces, as part of the New Development Model launched in 2015, noting that this model has played a “positive role” in improving the lives of the populations in the Moroccan Sahara.
