The United Nations (UN) Secretary-General, António Guterres, called on Monday for an immediate ceasefire in Sudan, which has been plagued by clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces (FAS) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since Saturday.
“I strongly condemn the outbreak of fighting that is taking place in Sudan and appeal to the leaders of the Rapid Support Forces (RAF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) to immediately cease hostilities, restore calm, and begin a dialogue to resolve the crisis,” stressed Guterres.
Urging for peace and support for efforts to end violence, restore order and return to the path of transition, Guterres warned that “any further escalations will have devastating effects on the country and the region,”
In a similar context, the Secretary-General said that Sudan is already in a fragile humanitarian situation, adding that it is now “catastrophic”.
According to the United Nations (UN), one-third of the Sudanese population, approximately 15 million people, are facing serious food insecurity due to the suspension of the World Food Programme (WFP) operations in the country.
The United Nations said that threats to its teams make it impossible for them to operate safely and effectively. According to the Sudan Doctors Union, approximately 100 civilians were killed in the ongoing clashes between the Sudanese army and paramilitary forces.
