A new tragedy for Africa! At least twenty African migrants have died at the gates of Europe, trying to cross the Spanish enclave of Melilla on the Moroccan border.
“At least 23 people died this Friday, June 24 at the gates of Europe. 2,000 African migrants attempted in the early hours of the morning to illegally cross the boundary wall between Morocco and the Spanish enclave of Melilla”, from Saturday June 25, 2022. This is the first massive entry since the normalization of relations between Madrid and Rabat.
The victims were killed either in a stampede or by falling from the high perimeter wall they were trying to scale. This massive entry attempt into one of the two Spanish enclaves is the first since the normalization of relations between Madrid and Rabat in mid-March, after a diplomatic quarrel lasting nearly a year.
The final toll of this tragedy is not yet known but should increase in view of the many videos and images published on social networks and which show dozens of migrants on the ground, almost inert. The provisional toll communicated by the province of Nador reported 18 dead, including migrants from sub-Saharan Africa. In its press release, the province of Nador reported “very violent” clashes and indicated that the victims died trying to pass through the iron fence.
