Members of the Peruvian Congress expressed on May 29 in Rabat their willingness to establish a parliamentary working group to support the Moroccan Autonomy Plan for the settlement of the conflict over the Moroccan Sahara.
In a statement following his meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, member of the Peruvian Congress, Carlos Ernesto Bustamante Donayre, stated that this visit to the Kingdom seeks to set up a working group to support the autonomy plan for Morocco’s southern provinces.
Bustamante Donayre, who is on a working visit to Morocco at the head of a parliamentary delegation, affirmed that this working group aims to underline the positive impact of the Moroccan Plan on development, human rights, education, and health, with the prospect of writing a report to be submitted to the Peruvian government and the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In a similar context, the Peruvian official added that the objective is to highlight the importance of strong, active relations with Morocco in the interests of both countries and overcome “the consequences of the erroneous decisions” adopted by the government of former president Pedro Castillo.
For her part, the President of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Peruvian Congress, Maria del Carmen Alva Prieto, reported that the delegation had discussed the current situation in Peru with Bourita, especially following recent upheavals in the country.
Alva Prieto also added that this visit also aims to give an insight into Peru’s reality to African and Arab countries through Morocco, noting that it is “a gesture of great importance to us.”
The Peruvian parliamentary delegation, which includes members of the Peru-Morocco parliamentary friendship group, will also hold talks with several Moroccan officials.
