Morocco’s ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations (UN), Omar Hilale, reiterated “Morocco’s full support for Palestinians in the protection of their legitimate rights, particularly the right to establish an independent and viable Palestinian State with East al-Quds as its capital.
Intervening at the general debate of the Ministerial Meeting of the Coordinating Bureau of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Baku, Azerbaijan (July 5-6), Hilale recalled that His Majesty King Mohammed VI, in his capacity as Chairman of al-Quds Committee of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), has elevated the Palestinian cause to be His first national cause and a cornerstone of the Kingdom’s foreign policies.
“Morocco shares the same stance as the rest of the Islamic and Arab countries in strongly condemning the recent Israeli attacks on Jenin, as the escalation of violence aggravates the situation and affects the chances of relaunching the peace process,” added the Moroccan diplomat.
Hilale also underlined “the Kingdom’s rejection of all unilateral measures that affect the legal status of al-Quds Asharif, and the legitimate rights of Palestinians to realize their aspirations to freedom and independence.”
In the final statement adopted following the Baku Conference, the foreign ministers of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) praised the leading role of His Majesty King Mohammed VI in defending the Palestinian cause.
NAM’s foreign ministers also commended the efforts undertaken by His Majesty the King, as Chairman of al-Quds Committee of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), welcoming, in this regard, the conclusions and final communiqué of the 20th session of al-Quds Committee, held in Marrakech on January 17 and 18, 2014.
The ministers of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) recalled the achievements of the first meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Ministerial Contact Group on Palestine and East Jerusalem, held in Rabat on November 12, 2014, under the chairmanship of Morocco, with the participation of Azerbaijan, Egypt, Guinea, Jordan, Malaysia, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Secretary General.
The ministers also expressed their support for all practical measures to support Palestine and strengthen the resilience of the inhabitants of al-Quds.
In a similar context, the foreign ministers called on all member states of the Movement to support Bayt Mal al-Quds Asharif Agency, the executive body of al-Quds Committee chaired by His Majesty King Mohammed VI.
The final document of the Baku Conference also welcomed Al-Quds Appeal, which was signed in Rabat, on March 30, 2019, by His Majesty King Mohammed VI and His Holiness Pope Francis, and emphasizes the important role played by Al-Quds as a city of tolerance and mutual respect between the populations of the three monotheistic religions, while stressing the need to preserve its characteristics as a city of peaceful coexistence.
Morocco participated in the ministerial meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Baku, with a delegation led by Hilale, including Morocco’s Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Adil Embarch, and the Director of the United Nations (UN) and International Organizations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Redouane Houssaini.
