Morocco has been elected President of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for 2024, during a vote held on January 9 in Geneva.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Affairs Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, 30 of the 40 UNHRC members expressed their support for Morocco’s candidacy, compared to that of South Africa, which received only 17 votes.
Morocco’s historic election illustrates the international community’s recognition of the Wise Vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may Allah assist Him in terms of the protection and promotion of human rights.
This election, thanks to the support of a large number of countries from all over the world, and despite the attempts of Algeria and South Africa to counter it, also testifies to the confidence and credibility inspired by Morocco’s external action under the Royal Impulse both regionally and internationally.
Morocco, a recognized contributor to the efforts of the UNHRC, considers the international community’s support as a strong recognition of its constructive approach, and its unifying leadership on key subjects such as interfaith dialogue, tolerance, and the fight against racial hatred, the right to a healthy and sustainable environment, migrants’ rights and the impact of new technologies.
The press release affirms that during this mandate, the Kingdom will follow the same path it had adopted during its last three mandates within the UNHRC, always favoring dialogue, while actively continuing, with the members of the Council and all regional groups, to strengthen the confluence of this important component of the UN human rights system.
