Switzerland highlighted the importance of Morocco’s serious and credible efforts to reach a political and compromising solution to the conflict over the Moroccan Sahara, describing the Moroccan Autonomy Plan as a “positive” contribution to the settlement process.
Following his meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, on June 23 in Rabat, Swiss Federal Councillor, Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, Ignazio Cassis, expressed his country’s position in support of the Moroccan Autonomy Plan.
“Switzerland recognizes and reiterates the importance of the serious and credible efforts that Morocco is investing to find a compromising, political, and peaceful solution,” affirmed Cassis.
Referring to the Autonomy Plan presented by Morocco to the United Nations (UN) General Secretariat on April 11, 2007, the Swiss official underlined that “this initiative is a positive step in the process, and we will do everything in our power to facilitate a favorable solution.”
“It’s time for this conflict to be settled and for a solution to be reached because this crisis has been ongoing for far too long,” stressed the head of the Swiss diplomacy.
The Swiss official also noted that his country supports the efforts of the United Nations (UN) and its essential role in the resolution process concerning the Sahara conflict, underlining that Switzerland supports a political solution in line with international law and Security Council (SC) resolutions.
“I think we need to find an agreement with the United Nations (UN) representative that can bring the process to a successful conclusion with flexibility on everyone’s part,” concluded Cassis.
