Guatemala reiterated its support for a political solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, within a framework of respect for the Kingdom’s territorial integrity and national sovereignty.
Intervening before the Fourth Committee (4C) of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, Guatemala’s representative expressed “Guatemala’s support for Morocco’s efforts to find a political and peaceful solution to the regional dispute over the Sahara,” adding that his country “considers the Autonomy Plan a realistic, credible, and serious basis for a negotiated solution between the parties, within a framework of Morocco’s territorial integrity and national sovereignty”.
Guatemala stressed the “importance” of resuming the round table process in the same format and with the same four participants, namely Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania, and the “polisario,” in accordance with United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Resolution 2654.
The Guatemalan diplomat also expressed his country’s support for the efforts of the United Nations Secretary-General (UNSG) and his Personal Envoy for the Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, praising de Mistura’s recent “successful” visit to Morocco, notably to Laâyoune and Dakhla in September, during which he met the presidents of the two Moroccan Saharan regions, elected officials, local authorities, economic players, and representatives of civil society.
