“The Mother of All Lies,” directed by Moroccan filmmaker Asmae El Moudir, recently won the prestigious Sydney Film Prize at the Sydney Film Festival.
The jury, which included director Anurag Kashyap, actress Mia Wasikowska, writer and director Larissa Behrendt, filmmaker Visakesa Chandrasekaram, and journalist Dorothee Wenner, unanimously selected El Moudir’s documentary as the best picture in the Sydney Film Festival following a careful evaluation of the films participating in this year’s edition.
This achievement is a well-deserved tribute to the innovative approach of El Moudir, who explored in her documentary her memories and those of her country, Morocco.
Last May, Moroccan cinema marked the 76th Cannes Film Festival, during which two feature films were honored in the prestigious “Un certain regard” category of the official selection, including “The Mother of All Lies” (Kadib Abyad) that won the “Best Directing Honor,” and “Les Meutes” by Moroccan Director Kamal Lazraq that won the “Jury Prize”.
