Kuwait reaffirmed, on October 10 in New York, its support for the Moroccan Autonomy Plan aimed at reaching a solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara within the framework of Morocco’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Intervening before the members of the Fourth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Kuwait’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Faisal Ghazi Al-Enezi, reiterated “Kuwait’s support for the Moroccan Autonomy Plan, which constitutes a constructive basis for finding a mutually acceptable solution between all parties, while respecting Morocco’s unity and sovereignty”, reaffirming the unified position of the Gulf States on the Moroccan Sahara issue.
The Kuwaiti diplomat also reiterated his country’s support for the efforts of the United Nations Secretary-General (UNSG), which led to the holding of two round tables in Geneva, in accordance with the relevant Security Council (SC) resolutions.
Highlighting the “positive spirit” that prevailed at these two meetings, Kuwait’s representative expressed his country’s support for the momentum generated by the round tables, which “remain the only route to a compromise political solution”.
In this regard, the Kuwaiti diplomat stressed the importance of resuming these round tables in the same format and with the same participants, in accordance with Security Council (SC) Resolution 2654.
The diplomat also hailed the efforts of the United Nations Secretary-General’s (UNSG) Personal Envoy for the Moroccan Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, to facilitate the relaunch of the political process under the supervision of the United Nations Secretary-General (UNSG), notably his visits to Rabat, Algiers, Nouakchott, and the Algerian camps of Tindouf in 2022, in addition to the informal bilateral consultations he held in March 2023 in New York with all the parties, further praising de Mistura’s visit to Morocco, Algeria, and Mauritania last September.
