Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, held talks, Wednesday in Rabat, with the President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, who is on a working visit to Morocco.
This visit is a follow-up to the positive impetus initiated, last February, at the 12th Session of the Moroccan-Spanish High-Level Meeting which was co-chaired by Akhannouch and the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez.
The visit also paves the way for the regional governments of Spain to join the Spanish government’s favorable stance on the Sahara issue, which considers the autonomy plan an important, realistic, and reliable basis for settling the artificial dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
On this occasion, Akhannouch commended the solid relations between Morocco and the Canary Islands, stressing that the historical ties and geographical proximity between the two parties provide promising prospects for economic partnership.
Akhannouch also praised the Canary Islands’ businesses in Morocco, which benefit from Morocco’s significant opportunities in the fields of tourism and renewable energy, noting that this economic partnership can be further strengthened in the maritime field, the desalination of seawater and the promotion of tourism.
During this meeting, which was also attended by Spain’s Ambassador to Morocco, Ricardo Diez Hochleitner, the two parties highlighted Morocco and Spain’s coordination on immigration issues and the fight against networks of human trafficking, further reviewing ways to strengthen cooperation between Morocco and the Canary Islands.
