Morocco’s permanent representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva (UNOG), Ambassador Omar Zniber, reaffirmed on June 20, in Geneva, the Kingdom’s commitment to promoting human rights.
Intervening at the 53rd session of the Human Rights Council (HRC), which kicked off on June 19, Zniber emphasized that “Morocco’s cooperation with human rights mechanisms will be further strengthened this year, through the review in November of the report submitted to the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.”
The Moroccan diplomat added that the Kingdom, which hosted an international seminar for national human rights mechanisms in December, worked diligently alongside Paraguay, Portugal, and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), to advance the implementation process of a networking platform for such mechanisms, to encourage joint learning and consultation and strengthen cooperation with the United Nations (UN) human rights system.
In a similar context, the Moroccan ambassador recalled that Morocco recently hosted the Parliamentary Conference on Interfaith Dialogue, which was an opportunity to call for the establishment of a mechanism to promote this dialogue as a common objective, which serves as a basis for coexistence and a tool to prevent the instrumentalization of religion by extremist ideologies.
Zniber also recalled that His Majesty King Mohammed 6th had declared the Amazigh New Year’s Day as an official paid national holiday, similar to the first of Muharram of the Hijri year and the Gregorian calendar’s New Year’s Day.
Referring to the current session of the Human Rights Council, Zniber announced that the Moroccan delegation will submit a draft resolution on the impact of corruption and will contribute, in its capacity as a member of the Core Group, to the drafting of the decision on new technologies and the renewal of the mandates of special rapporteurs on leprosy and extreme poverty.
The Moroccan diplomat also recalled that Morocco presented in March its multidimensional, preventive, and humanist strategy to the Committee on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of their Families (CMW), with programs covering education, health, employment, and legal and social assistance.
