Morocco reiterated, before the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), its call for a cease to military aggression in the Middle East region, thus protecting it from the horrors of a conflict threatening to destroy any chance of peace and stability.
Speaking at a special session of the United Nations General Assembly, Morocco’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), Omar Hilale, noted that the region had recently witnessed several acts of violence against all civilians and their property, including hospitals, violations of international law and international humanitarian law, and military operations in the Gaza Strip, noting that Morocco follows this situation with great concern.
Ambassador Hilale called, on behalf of Morocco, for an end to escalation, bloodshed, and military aggression, while emphasizing the urgent need to protect all civilians per the principles of international law and shared human values.
The Moroccan diplomat also noted that the Kingdom stresses the importance of allowing humanitarian aid to reach the inhabitants of the Gaza Strip rapidly, continuously, and in sufficient quantities and rejecting solutions and ideas aimed at displacing Palestinians from their territory and endangering the security of neighboring countries, adding that the Kingdom underlines the imperative of launching a genuine peace process leading to the two-state solution, with the establishment of a Palestinian state with East Al-Quds as its capital based on the June 4, 1967, borders, coexisting side by side with Israel.
Ambassador Hilale also recalled that following the Summit for Peace held in Cairo on October 21, Morocco and eight Arab countries issued a statement calling on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to urge the parties to commit to an immediate and lasting ceasefire and to guarantee and facilitate rapid, safe, continuous, and unimpeded access of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
The Moroccan diplomat added that the Arab, Islamic, and Non-Aligned Groups had called for a special session after the Security Council failed to adopt a resolution that would end the tragic situation in Gaza, expressing the hope that the resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) would be an important step towards solving the current crisis.
The Moroccan ambassador also stressed that as part of the constant commitment of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Chairman of Al-Quds Committee, to the Palestinian cause, and based on His Majesty’s High Instructions, Morocco has sent emergency humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people, adding that this aid was handed over to the Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC) for delivery to the Gaza Strip.
In a similar context, Hilale pointed out that Al-Quds Committee, under the High Royal Instructions of His Majesty the King, has sent a contribution to the main hospital and social establishments in charge of emergency medical and social cases resulting from developments in the situation in the Gaza Strip.
The Moroccan diplomat also reiterated the Kingdom’s full solidarity with the legitimate rights of the brotherly Palestinian people, based on international legitimacy and the internationally agreed two-state solution.
Ambassador Hilale further emphasized, on behalf of Morocco, the need to cease all measures undermining the legal and historical status of the Holy City of Al-Quds, in the service of peace and stability, noting that the Holy City must remain a land of encounter and a symbol of coexistence for followers of the three monotheistic religions, in addition to being a hub for the values of mutual respect and dialogue as stipulated in Al-Quds Appeal signed by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Chairman of Al-Quds Committee, and His Holiness Pope Francis on March 2, 2019, in Rabat.
The Moroccan Ambassador, thus, recalled an extract from His Majesty the King’s message to the Chairman of the United Nations (UN) Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People (CEIRPP), in which the Sovereign stated the following: “The current deadlock in the political process between the Palestinian and Israeli sides does not promote the peace we are yearning for in the region. Nevertheless, I encourage the positive signs and commendable initiatives undertaken to rebuild confidence and launch meaningful negotiations that help achieve a just, comprehensive, and lasting solution to the Palestinian issue, in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions, and the two-state solution, which is a realistic option.”
Hilale concluded by stressing that Morocco, under the Leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Chairman of Al-Quds Committee, is committed to the promotion of peace and reiterates its readiness to coordinate with all partners to engage in international efforts to end the tragic and dangerous situation in Gaza.
