Morocco stressed, in Burundi at a retreat of the Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU), the urgency of adopting a multidimensional approach to effectively counter the terrorist threat in Africa.
Intervening at the third consultative meeting between AU’s Peace and Security Council (PSC) and the deliberative bodies of the Regional Economic Communities and Regional Mechanisms (RECs/RMs) held on August 28 and 29, Morocco stressed the urgent need to adopt a multidimensional, holistic, and integrated approach to effectively counter the terrorist threat affecting several African countries.
Speaking during a debate on the resurgence of terrorism and violent extremism in Africa, the Moroccan delegation stated that the terrorist groups plaguing Africa have resulted in significant human and material damage, as well as massive displacement of the civilian population across borders, posing a major security challenge for African countries.
The Moroccan delegation stressed that to deal effectively with this threat, African countries must recognize the vital importance of early warning and preventive diplomacy in combating and preventing security threats, which continue to undermine the achievement of the key objectives of the pan-African organization’s 2036 Agenda, as well as the United Nations (UN) 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
This meeting was an opportunity for the Moroccan delegation to shed light on Morocco’s pioneering role in countering terrorism and violent extremism and the Kingdom’s efforts to better identify, analyze, and prevent terrorist threats, particularly in Africa, thus concretizing joint African action against the terrorist threat.
Considering the threat posed by terrorism to African countries, Morocco has called on the adoption of a multidimensional and comprehensive approach, based on the Peace, Security, and Development Nexus to counter these dangerous links and promote an effective, integrated response that addresses the concerns of the African citizen to achieve human development objectives, promote peace, security, and stability, and support regional economic integration based on the win-win principle.
The Moroccan delegation reiterated Morocco’s willingness to share its internationally recognized and acclaimed expertise with brotherly African countries in their fight against this phenomenon, which is paralyzing their development processes, as part of the Kingdom’s cooperation with the continent’s countries.
