The Central African Republic (CAR) praised the dynamic socio-economic development of the Moroccan Sahara, thanks to the New Development Model launched in 2015.
Intervening before the members of the Fourth Committee (4C) of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), the Central African Republic’s representative commended the opening of consulates general in the cities of Laâyoune and Dakhla.
The Central African diplomat expressed his country’s support for the efforts of the United Nations Secretary-General (UNSG) and his Personal Envoy, Staffan de Mistura, to relaunch the political process on the basis of Security Council (SC) resolutions.
The Central African Republic’s representative also hailed de Mistura’s recent visit to the Moroccan Sahara in September and Morocco’s full cooperation with the Personal Envoy in relaunching the political process.
In this regard, the Central African diplomat called on Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania, and the “polisario” to resume the United Nations (UN) round-table process with a view to finding a realistic and mutually acceptable political solution to this regional dispute, praising the Kingdom’s commitment to the ceasefire and its full cooperation with the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Sahara (MINURSO).
In a different context, the Central African representative denounced the “polisario’s” unilateral withdrawal from the ceasefire, as well as the restrictions it proceeds to impose on freedom of movement and MINURSO supplies to innocent populations in need, which the representative described as “a serious violation of international humanitarian law”, calling for an “urgent and appropriate” solution to help end the “suffering of these powerless populations”.
