United Nations Spokesman Stephane Dujarric confirmed on Friday the killing of two Egyptian soldiers from the United Nations peacekeeping forces in Mali, when an explosive device exploded, according to the United Nations News Center.
Dujarric told reporters at the permanent headquarters in New York that the two soldiers were killed after an improvised explosive device exploded in their vehicle outside the city of Donza in the Mopti region, and two other soldiers were wounded in the attack.
“The Secretary-General condemns this new attack on our peacekeepers who are fulfilling their mandate in Mali that was granted to them by the Security Council in very difficult circumstances,” Dujarric added.
He pointed out that this incident is the sixth of its kind in which a United Nations peacekeeping convoy has been attacked since May 22, and is the second deadly attack on a United Nations peacekeeping convoy this week only.
“Our colleagues managed to secure the area and we are trying to get more details,” he said.
