Belgium considers the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative, presented in 2007, as “a serious and credible effort” by Morocco and “a good basis” for a solution accepted by all the parties concerned.
This position was expressed in the joint declaration adopted during the third meeting of the Morocco-Belgium High Joint Partnership Commission, co-chaired on April 15 in Rabat, by the Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, and the Prime Minister of Belgium, Alexander De Croo.
In this regard, De Croo reiterated his country’s “long-standing support for the process led by the United Nations for a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution”.
On the same note, both parties agreed on the exclusivity of the United Nations (UN) in the political process and reaffirmed their support for UN Security Council (SC) resolution 2703, which notes the role and responsibility of the parties concerned in the search for a realistic, pragmatic, and lasting political solution based on compromise.
