The work of the Symposium commemorating the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the first elected Parliament in Morocco kicked off on January 16 in Rabat.
Participants in this high-level event will focus on two main themes relating to the “Constitutional Evolution of the Structure and Functions of Parliament” and the “Pillars, Challenges and Perspectives of Parliamentary Action”.
The first session revolves around the Moroccan bicameral system and the relationship between the legislative and executive powers as well as the evaluation of public policies, while the second session will examine the link between Parliament and democratic practice, the “open parliament ” and the challenges relating to parliamentary action.
On the sidelines of this Symposium, Parliament is also organizing an exhibition of photos and documents in partnership with the Archives du Maroc.
This exhibition covers the key stages of parliamentary action which has accompanied the Kingdom’s institutional, democratic and societal development “since the creation of the National Consultative Council in 1956, the core of this legislative institution, at the initiative of the late His Majesty King Mohammed V, through the promulgation of the country’s first Fundamental Law, the holding of elections which provided for the first bicameral Parliament, composed of the House of Representatives and the House of Councilors in 1963, under the reign of the late His Majesty King Hassan II, and the implementation of profound reforms and global and multidimensional development, initiated under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may Allah assist Him.
On this occasion, tribute will be paid to former deputies Badia Skalli and Latifa Bennani Smires, the first two women to take part in the Moroccan Parliament in the 1990s.
