Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection (FM6E), chaired by HRH Princess Lalla Hasnaa, presented, on the sidelines of COP28 in Dubai, its experience in supporting companies and organizations in terms of low carbon transition.
During a side event organized on December 5, at the Morocco Pavilion, the Foundation shared its decarbonization experience and that of its partners who, through an inclusive and participatory approach, succeeded in developing a national reference method to help Moroccan organizations calculate their carbon footprint.
Held on the occasion of the thematic day on energy at COP28, this meeting was an opportunity to highlight concrete actions to reduce carbon emissions, present projects of carbon compensation on an African scale, and underline the fundamental role of training and capacity building in the success of low carbon transition.
FM6E’s Senior Decarbonization Expert, Nasma Jrondi, stated that the Foundation positions itself as a unifier and catalyst for all the efforts of the various actors at the national level, with a mission to accompany the Moroccan economy on its low-carbon transition.
Jrondi, the discussions’ moderator, presented the carbon balance tool, developed by the Foundation and its partners, which allows the calculation of the carbon footprint of products and organizations, through 530 emission factors, all calculated in 2022, and 60% of which are adapted to the national context.
The expert explained that this tool enables companies to measure their products’ carbon footprint, particularly in anticipation of the entry into force of the European Union’s (EU) Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).
During this side event, which saw the participation of an audience of speakers, such as the Vice-President of the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises (CGEM), Mehdi Tazi, and various Moroccan and foreign institutional and private actors, participants expressed their awareness of the importance of decarbonization and reviewed the different actions relating low-carbon transition.
Idrissa Diatta, Project Unit Coordinator at Senegal’s National Waste Management Company (SONAGED), was one of the participants who shared the experience of his institution in terms of methane reduction as part of integrated solid waste management and reviewed the opportunities offered by the carbon market in this perspective.
Other speakers from the Moroccan National Railways Office (ONCF), the National Ports Agency (ANP), and LafargeHolcim, shared their experience in measuring their products’ carbon footprint using the carbon footprint calculation tool developed by the Foundation and its partners.
It should be recalled that the National Low-Emission Development Strategy published in 2021 falls within the ambitious climate policy driven by His Majesty King Mohammed VI.
That year also witnessed the signing of a framework agreement to support Moroccan economic actors in this low-carbon transition, in particular via the carbon balance tool.
The agreement was signed by the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the General Confederation of Moroccan Entreprises (CGEM), the Moroccan Agency for Energy Efficiency (AMEE), and the Moroccan Institute for Standardization (IMANOR), at the initiative of Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection (FM6E).
The Foundation and its partners aim to make this tool also available in digital version, to become a national reference tool, recognized at the international level.
