The International Atomic Energy Association (IAEA) has positioned Morocco among the key players in the new wave of countries likely to integrate nuclear power into their energy mix.
In a statement to the World Nuclear Exhibition (WNE) in Paris, IAEA’s Director General, Rafael Mariano Grossi, announced that approximately a dozen countries are preparing to kick off their nuclear power generation in the next few years.
According to Grossi, estimates by the IAEA indicate that doubling the current number of nuclear reactors in the world, which currently stand at around 400 units, is essential to meet the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement.
The Director General also pointed out that currently, ten countries have decided to build nuclear power plants, while seventeen other countries are in the evaluation phase, foreshadowing the future emergence of twelve to thirteen new nuclear countries, including Morocco, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Namibia, the Philippines, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan.
These developments testify to the global impetus towards nuclear power as a solution to climate change challenges and the growing demand for energy.
