Morocco was re-elected, on June 27, in New York, in the person of Mohammed Charef, member of the Committee on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of their Families (CMW), for the period 2024-2027, during the elections held on the occasion of the 11th Meeting of States Parties to the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates reported that Morocco topped all the candidates in the running with 47 votes, adding that this was “a veritable plebiscite for the Moroccan candidate compared to those from countries with aggressive and inhumane migration policies.”
The Foreign Ministry added that this competitive election testifies to Morocco’s credibility and confidence in the field of migration management, under the Wise Vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Leader of the African Union (AU) on migrations.
In this regard, the Ministry also noted that this election reflects the trust that the Kingdom enjoys at the international level, and the recognition of its role in the humanist, responsible, and mutually supportive management of migration, underlining that this election is also a consecration of Morocco’s efforts at the national level, through the implementation of the National Immigration and Asylum Strategy.
Morocco, which hosted the Conference that adopted the Marrakech Pact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration in 2018, is also home to the African Union’s (AU) Migration Observatory (AMO).
Morocco’s re-election is a testament to the relevance of the strategy the Kingdom has implemented, in line with the High Royal Directives, to further consolidate its presence within international organizations and the different human rights treaty bodies and committees.
The Moroccan Ministry underlined that with this new success, Morocco is currently present in almost all treaty bodies, which reflects international recognition for Moroccan expertise in the protection of human rights, noting that this new electoral consecration was achieved thanks to the efforts of the whole diplomatic corps.
Mohammed Charef, a member of the French National Council for Human Rights and a university lecturer, is a renowned expert in migration flows and mobility management.
The Committee on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers (CMW) is a group of fourteen experts, who are tasked with monitoring the implementation of the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of their Families.
