The President of Cape Verde’s National Assembly, Austelino Tavares Correia, reiterated, on June 13 in Marrakech, his country’s support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and the Moroccan Autonomy Plan.
“As President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Cape Verde, I reaffirm Cape Verde’s position in favor of Morocco’s territorial integrity,” stated Tavares Correia following his talks with Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rachid Talbi Alami, and Speaker of the House of Councilors, Naam Mayara, on the sidelines of the Parliamentary Conference on Interfaith Dialogue.
Reaffirming that Cape Verde “considers the Sahara an integral part of Morocco,” the Cape Verdean official expressed his country’s support for the Moroccan Autonomy Plan proposed by the Kingdom to solve the conflict over the Moroccan Sahara.
In this regard, the Cape Verdean official stressed that the United Nations (UN) is “the exclusive framework” for solving the conflict over the Moroccan Sahara.
In a document addressed on May 23 to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, the Cape Verdean government reiterated its support for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom and the Moroccan Autonomy Plan as the “only credible and realistic solution” to the dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
In a similar context, Tavares Correia underlined that his talks with the speakers of the Moroccan parliament’s two houses were an opportunity to highlight the excellent cooperation relations uniting Morocco and Cape Verde, underlining that the two countries’ legislative institutions are committed to strengthening their parliamentary relations and diplomacy, notably through the parliamentary friendship groups of the two countries.
The President of Cape Verde’s National Assembly also noted that bilateral relations were boosted following the opening of the Cape Verdean embassy on August 30, 2022, in Rabat, the visit of Cape Verde’s Prime Minister, Jose Ulisses Correia E Silva, to Morocco in May 2023, and the holding of the Morocco-Cabo Verde Joint Commission, which was crowned by the signing of several cooperation agreements in different fields.
