The US commended, on May 30 in Jeju Island, during the high-level political meeting of the Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI), underway until June 2, Morocco’s role in the fight against the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in Africa.
Intervening at this meeting, the US Under Secretary for Arms Control and International Security, Ambassador Bonnie Jenkins, welcomed Morocco’s partnership with the UnS within the Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI) framework, noting that this partnership will be strengthened by further operational actions for African countries in 2024, in line with Morocco’s established role as a model in the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD).
The Jeju meeting will adopt a joint declaration, supported by over 80 countries, including Morocco, which calls for enhanced regional and international cooperation in the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD), in response to the emerging security dynamics of the current geopolitical context.
The Moroccan delegation to this high-level meeting includes the Director of the United Nations (UN) and International Organizations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Redouane Houssaini, and other senior officials from the National Defense Administration and the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN).
The Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI) is a multilateral voluntary cooperation framework established in 2003, with Morocco as one of the founding members, to implement the “Interdiction Principles.”
This initiative aims to strengthen operational cooperation between different ministries and national agencies tasked with security through measures to combat the illicit transport of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and their delivery systems.
