Cape Verde’s government expressed its respect for the territorial integrity of Morocco, reaffirming its support for the Moroccan Autonomy Plan as the “only credible and realistic solution” to the dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
In a document addressed on May 23 to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, the Cap Verdean Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Regional Integration reiterated its support for the United Nations (UN) efforts as the framework for achieving a “realistic, practical and lasting” solution to the Sahara conflict.
“The Cap Verdean government also reiterates Cap Verde’s support for a lasting solution that preserves Morocco’s territorial integrity, under the auspices of the United Nations (UN) and in compliance with Decision 693 of the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) of July 2018,” stated the document.
The Cape Verdean diplomacy recalled that its position was “clearly expressed by the Prime Minister and Head of Government of Cape Verde, José Ulisses Correia e Silva, during his meeting with Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, as part of his recent and successful official visit to Morocco.”
The document also emphasized that “the definition and execution of the internal and external policy is a political competence of the Government,” in accordance with Article 185 and paragraph (a) of number 1 of Article 203 of the constitution of Cape Verde.
