The Director General of the Moroccan National Tourism Office (ONMT), Adel El Fakir, and the Executive Vice President of Network and Revenue Management and Commercial Director of Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS), Erik Westman, signed a historic agreement on the launch of weekly direct flights linking Agadir to the cities of Stockholm, Sweden, and Copenhagen, Denmark on the Scandinavian Airlines (SAS).
The agreement, which will enter into force in November 2023, is unprecedented, as Scandinavian Airlines will operate regular flights to Morocco for the first time.
On this occasion, El Fakir stated that “the largest airline in Northern Europe will operate in Morocco,” adding that “this is a big step in our exploration of new growth markets.”
“This strategic partnership will enable us to secure regular tourist flows and guarantee a good winter season for the seaside resort of Agadir,” said El Fakir.
Through this partnership, ONMT aims to strengthen its position in the Scandinavian market, especially since it contributes over 30 million tourists and is one of the most profitable markets, generating tens of billions of euros annually.
With 130 aircraft, Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) is the leading airline in Nordic countries and a founding member of Star Alliance, the world’s largest airline alliance. SAS operates two main hubs: Stockholm’s Arlanda Airport and Copenhagen’s Kastrup Airport.
Similar to Agadir, Marrakech will also be connected to Sweden and Denmark thanks to the Office’s partnership with low-cost Norwegian Air Shuttle airlines, which will offer flights to Marrakech from Copenhagen and Stockholm.
ONMT is consistent with its ambitious “Light In Action 2023-2026” action plan, which focuses on the aerial sector as one of its key pillars.
The aim is to boost the progression of point-to-point airlines with different emission basins and double capacities by 2030.
