On April 22 of every year, the world commemorates International Mother Earth Day, which celebrates the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970.
This day sheds light on the achievements of the environmental movement and raises awareness of the need to protect the Earth’s natural resources for future generations.
This year’s theme is “Invest in Our Planet,” which stresses the importance of dedicating time, resources, and energy to fight against environmental issues, particularly climate change.
Similar to previous years, International Mother Earth Day urges people to get involved in protecting the environment by planting trees, reducing plastic consumption, and supporting sustainable fashion.
In the 1960s, Senator Gaylord Nelson from Wisconsin created a national celebration of the environmental movement, and on April 22, 1970, he organized the first International Mother Earth Day with Harvard University’s graduate student, Denis Hayes.
Nowadays, the International Mother Earth Day Network, whose mission is to broaden, diversify, and mobilize the environmental movement worldwide, has over 20,000 partners and organizations in 190 countries.
“For this International Mother Earth Day, let’s remind ourselves – more than ever – that we need a shift to a more sustainable economy that works for both people and the planet. Let’s promote harmony with nature and the Earth,” recalled the United Nations (UN).
