The Summit of the Heads of State and Government of the 54 member countries of the African Union (AU) adopted the Declaration of the African Union’s (AU) Political Conference on the promotion of the link between peace, security, and development in Africa, commonly known as the “Tangier Declaration”, at its 36th Ordinary Session held between February 18 and 19 in Addis Ababa.
The Tangier Declaration, adopted in October 2022 at the inaugural African Union (AU) Policy Conference on Promoting the Peace, Security, and Development Nexus in Africa, was unanimously approved by the Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU). It introduces a new multidimensional approach to address the relationship between peace, security, and development in strategies and programs to counter terrorism and extremism in Africa.
The African Union (AU) Summit urged the African Union Commission (AUC) to implement the recommendations of the Tangier Declaration, calling on partners in this process to further support the execution of projects related to the link between peace, security, and development. This approach is essential to further promote regional integration and political stability in Africa.
