United Nations (UN) Secretary-General, António Guterres, announced on Thursday the appointment of Major General Fakhrul Ahsan of Bangladesh as Force Commander of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in the Sahara (MINURSO).
The spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, Stéphane Dujarric, stated that Ahsan will succeed Pakistani General Zia Ur Rehman, who will complete his term by the end of March.
Ahsan has over 34 years of experience serving as Commander of the Bangladesh Military Academy and director of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence at the Bangladesh Army headquarters. The new Force Commander also served in 2 peacekeeping missions, namely in Somalia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
