The electoral campaign for the legislative, regional and municipal elections of September 8 began Thursday in Morocco, polls that will seal the future of the Moroccan Islamist party, at the head of the current government coalition.
For the first time, nearly 18 million Moroccans, 46% of whom are women, are called to vote on the same day to elect the 395 deputies of the House of Representatives and the more than 31,000 municipal and regional elected representatives.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, major political meetings should not be held and gatherings of more than 25 people are prohibited.
Political parties have also announced the opening of their campaign in meetings with a limited number of participants, broadcast on the networks.
Major orientations
At the time, in the context of the Arab Spring, Morocco adopted a new Constitution granting broad prerogatives to Parliament and the government, but major decisions and orientations in key sectors continue to emanate from initiatives of King Mohammed. VI.
The country’s second political force, the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), founded by royal advisor Fouad Ali El-Himma in 2008 before he resigned in 2011, is also in competition to win the poll.
The National Rally of Independents (RNI), led by businessman Aziz Akhannouch, is also in contention, as is the Istiqlal Party (PI), which also has its chances according to local media forecasts.
