The Moroccan national football team defeated its Tanzanian counterpart (2-0) on the evening of November 21 at the Benjamin Mkapa stadium in Dar Es Salaam, as part of the second day of Group E’s African qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The national team’s first goal was scored by Hakim Ziyech (28’), while the second one was an own goal by Tanzanian player Bakari Mwamnyento (54’).
With this achievement, the national selection now sits at the top of Group E’s rankings.
It should be recalled that Morocco was drawn in Group E of the African qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup (USA-Canada-Mexico 2026) alongside Eritrea, Niger, Tanzania, Congo, and Zambia.
The draw for these qualifiers, which will kick off in November, took place on July 13 in Abidjan on the sidelines of the 45th Ordinary General Assembly of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), which was attended by the CAF’s President, Patrice Motsepe, FIFA President, Gianni Infantino, and President of the Moroccan Royal Football Federation (FRMF), Fouzi Lekjaa.
The 2026 World Cup will witness the participation of 48 teams for the first time, instead of the usual 32, as Africa will be entitled to nine directly-qualified representatives.
The teams partaking in the qualifiers are divided into nine groups, with the winners of each group automatically qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The four best runners-up in the group stage will play in a CAF playoff tournament, the winner of which will take part in a second and final FIFA play-off with five other teams, with the top two teams qualifying for the World Cup.
The groups are as follows:
Group: A: Egypt, Burkina Faso, Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leone, Ethiopia, and Djibouti.
Group B: Senegal, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mauritania, Togo, Sudan, and South Sudan.
